[In retrospect, it's a strange thought to him that the efforts to push him away were based on Vergilius' concerns and fears. Naturally that very much tracks for the man; Daan knows he can be soft in ways, and his worries are clear to him. It's just he isn't used to that concern being directed at him so much, and he could have more easily anticipated reasons to be rejected than all of that.
