Clubs like this aren't hugely surprising; bright neon lights with a strong casino feeling to them is kind of a staple. Gambling isn't strictly against the law, and a number of them have had their experiences with them, arranged by Eggman or otherwise. That isn't the issue here. No, there are concerns of some kind of traction -- a drug trade, specifically.
It's not often that they encounter something like this, but there are a few problems to it. They need to investigate, gain evidence, and find who is responsible. For once, they all agree that it has nothing to do with Eggman, but it leaves possible culprits on their list to be very short.
Most importantly, if Espio could find a sample, maybe they can find out more with some tests. There has to be a way to trace this to its source and determine the point beyond merely money.
Getting said sample is easier said than done. It takes Espio most of the evening to scope out the schedule of the security detail. When he is able to slip away and render himself unseeable, he doesn't get far.
Oh, just far enough, but not as far as he'd like. Slipping a tiny bottle into the compartment of his glove comes first, but when Espio is caught it's due entirely to the guard dog sniffing him out before grabbing him.
"Where do you think you're going?" the dog growls.
Espio's colors fade back into visibility. No point in trying to conceal himself now, but now he has to figure out a good cover!
News about this club had gotten to the Restoration as well, and while Amy isn't technically an active member anymore, she agrees to help in investigating the rumored shady business in the club's underground.
The problem is how to infiltrate. Going in announcing she's part of the Restoration would definitely raise all their defenses, and they'd do everything to hide any evidence. She had to find a way into the club without raising suspicion.
Amy is still trying to come up with a plan of her own when she catches sight of the familiar figure, caught by one of the security dogs guarding the club. She only has a moment to take in the situation, come up with an idea, and quickly head over to the two.
"Espio, there you are!" she calls out loudly, and when she's close enough she hooks her arm in the chameleon's. "I've been looking for you! I thought we agreed to meet closer to the entrance, silly!"
And she can only hope that he catches on to what she's doing.
Seeing Amy is not something he'd expected, and quietly he's grateful for her quick thinking; he really owes her for his blunder. After all, he's supposed to be a ninja spy, and getting caught is frankly kind of embarrassing!
The guard dog wrinkles his nose in suspicion, so Espio allows his sheepishness to come through instead of trying to mask it like he would naturally. "Forgive me, when I came in, I was interested in making sure to explore the place so you would enjoy yourself, Amy. I suppose the enthusiasm got the better of me."
Implying that he is but Amy's eager date seems to do the trick. The dog lets out a bark of a laugh, then gestures to the both of them. "Just make sure to keep your boyfriend in line, miss. Now go enjoy yourselves."
Fortunately Amy helps sells it with a girly, somewhat over-the-top giggle. “Aww, you’re so sweet!” It’s all too easy to fall into this role, what many people expect of her anyway after her days chasing Sonic. She’s grown a lot since then, but right now it seems to be working out for them, so she’ll use it to their advantage.
The security dog’s words earn another giggle, and she gives a wink. “I’ll do my best,” she says, her arm tightening in Espio’s just a bit as the dog lets them get further into the club.
Waiting until she’s sure they’re out of earshot, she then breathes out a sigh of relief. “That was close.”
