[Right. Okay.
Well, Adrian doesn't really need an escort anywhere, and he very nearly says as much -- then realizes how that looks. Right, this man "rescued" him. He really shouldn't give away much else. Better to go along with it.]
I would feel safer with you, then. Thank you.

Sometimes you have to leverage whatever advantages the world hands you, and this noble bastard happens to be one of them. ]
Have to come back here and do something about the bodies, tomorrow. Not like any of them have family to see to them.
[ He's trying to make conversation as they leave the old house, but conversation topics are limited to awful things. ]

Did he... take anyone that you knew?
[It's bad enough what Marius had done. Selecting the poor and the homeless. It'd been one of their many exhausting arguments, but clearly he'd taken someone that was noticed enough.]

[ He probably shouldn't be saying that in the tone of voice that implies that he absolutely has done this thing, especially not to someone who looks like a rich bastard himself. But hey, it's not like this village is going to pay him much anyway. Might as well take Complaining About People He Doesn't Like To A Semi-Captive Audience as a payment, then he can make a quick escape if he needs to. ]
But sometimes a man gets confused.

So it seems. I admire the thought you've placed into it. Most would not think about the people in the streets ignore by others.
Though I would not be blind as to think that you came here out of sheer charity. Were you paid?
no subject
[ He huffs at that. ] S'what happens when they only take people who won't be missed. Doesn't exactly inspire much of a bounty. When they pay at all, rather than the old 'well done, time to kick you out on your arse'.
[ Grumble grumble. Ungrateful shits. He can make more chopping wood if he finds someone to pay him than he can doing this. But sawmills don't like excommunicants. ]
Not much money here. Going to see if I can't get a room for the night and some food for the road out of this whole mess.
no subject
If nothing else, let me pay for your room tonight. For the people you avenged. ...And for protecting me, of course.
[Right. That part. That part definitely happened.]
What might I call my rescuer?

[ He doesn't give a last name. It's not too uncommon not to in smaller villages like this. There's not much need for it when most people know most other people. It only seems like a slightly deliberate omission, not a very deliberate one. He shrugs at the offer, the concept of gratitude being something that is way, way beyond him. ]
It's your coin, do what you like with it. Can't say I'd mind being spared the whole farce of having to barter people's lives for a bed.
no subject
[Also no last name because-- well. That would awkward for everyone involved. No reason to make things worse.]
Then let us make it easier for you for a night. Your meals and room are settled this evening, Trevor.
